You spend more time with yourself than with anyone else. You know what is going on in your head, and you know you are a good person. You might give yourself the benefit of the doubt if you make a mistake or act in a way that “isn’t you”. You know that deep down you meant to do the right thing. But guess what?
There is no such thing as deep down.
It’s tough to hear, but it’s true. Others can’t read our mind, they don’t know what our intentions were, and all they can see is your actions. And surprise, they will judge you for them (which isn’t really a surprise since we all do it). So if your actions don’t match what is going on in your mind, or don’t align with how you view yourself, it’s time to take a step back.
“I planned on going to the gym, but I got busy.”
“I was going to start working on my new project today, but I got side tracked.”
“I had a healthy breakfast, but there were cookies in the office and….. “
You know how this goes. Point is, no matter your intentions, you either did or did not do what you needed to do.
It’s ok to slip up occasionally, make mistakes or fall off the wagon, but don’t make a habit of it. That habit will ultimately become you. We have to create a habit of excellence day in and day out to become that. We can think of our good intentions or how we meant to do something, but unless we do it, it doesn’t mean a thing.
If all we have is excuses then that is all we are. Again, it does not matter what you meant to do, all that matters is if you do it. I either made the right choices or I didn’t. I either acted on what I needed to do or I did not. There is no deep down.
You either are the person you think you are or you aren’t. It is these day to day choices you make that build character and define who you are.
And the exciting thing…
…is that you are in control of your choices and you have the power to change that.
Start with one decision and make the right choice. Then do it again. Keep going until you are happy, until you feel like you are really you, until others can see you the way you see yourself.
You don’t need to worry about what kind of person you are deep down, because that isn’t real. You are your everyday actions that you present to the world, so every day you have a new opportunity to make the right choices, and build your character to match who you think you are.
As Yoda said…
“Do or do not, there is no try….”
